I thought I’d start off by explaining exactly what #GirlGains is, as I’ve had a lot of people asking me about it recently. Basically, it started as a hashtag created on social media by three health bloggers and influencers; Zanna Van Dijk, Tally Rye and Victoria Spence as a way of bringing girls interested in fitness and nutrition together. As the use of the hashtag grew, the girls created a separate instagram account and website for it and it developed into a community, which promotes so much more than just physical gains, but also gains in terms of self-love, positivity, ambition and body confidence.
Shortly before I moved to London last year, the girls started to organise meet-ups and events. I attended most of them alone to begin with as I didn’t know many people in London and although it was daunting at first, so many girls were in the same position and I immediately fell in love with the community and how open and friendly everyone was. I knew I wanted to get involved and help spread the positive message, as it’s one that resonates with me so much, so I was thrilled when they announced they would be taking on ambassadors.
Last week I organised the first #GirlGains event in the South-West, which took place at Bills in Exeter, Devon. I had no idea how many people would turn up or if there was even an interest in the area. Over 20 girls all got in touch wanting to reserve a place and it was honestly so rewarding to be able to bring like-minded people together and share our love of fitness and nutrition over the most stereotypical meal; avocado on toast.
I have since created a whatsapp group for all the girls as a place to arrange workouts, brunches, etc and am now in the process of organising the next event, which will be taking place in the New Year, so keep your eye out for more details to come!
