However, I had a bit of a wake-up call when I realised that I would not be visiting home as often, since as of August I will have a full-time job and a lot less holidays than I am used to at university!
I therefore decided to make the most of my time here in Switzerland. This got me thinking about summer and the importance of seizing opportunities. I find that so often we are caught up in our busy lives, and think that we don’t have the time to discover our local area.
My advice is to explore your surroundings this summer! So many of us have beautiful forests, parks, rivers, beaches or even mountains just a short commute away! With the weather so warm at the moment you don’t even need to go on holiday to be able to enjoy getting active outdoors.
I recently went on a trip with my family to Lake Lucerne, where we caught a boat across the river, took a train up the mountain and went for a walk with some of the most stunning views I’ve ever seen. Despite living in Switzerland twenty years and this route only an hour’s drive from my house, I had never been here before.
Not only did I get to discover a new part of my home country, but I got a great cardio session in too! There is nothing more invigorating than getting a sweat on outdoors in the summer and simultaneously exploring new places, rather than running on a treadmill for an hour in the gym. Going on walks with your family and loved ones also makes exercise more fun and something low intensity like walking is the perfect activity for socialising too. Check out my post about walking if you want to read about some more of the benefits of this type of cardio.
Going out for the day doesn’t mean that you have to compromise on your nutrition though. I find in Switzerland that options tend to be quite limited as the healthy food scene hasn’t really taken off as much here! I therefore packed my own lunch, which made for a cute picnic on the boat ride. This chicken quinoa salad was made simply from spinach leaves, cherry tomatoes, red onion, cucumber, quinoa, feta and some chicken cooked in paprika and cooked in coconut oil. The perfect mix of protein and carbs to keep me fuelled for the day’s activities.
So if you do one thing this summer… Make the Most of Your Surroundings!
