On Sunday, July 12th I got to take part in the biggest #GirlGains event to date, and it was honestly one of the highlights of my year. If you’re interested in learning more about what exactly this iconic hashtag that has now become a community involves, read this article! Not only did I get to meet the three beautiful women behind the movement; Zanna van Dijk, Tally Rye and Victoria Spence, but we sweat, ate and shopped together- my three favourite activities!
The day kicked off with a HIIT workout, led by personal trainer Tally Rye, who managed to somehow strike the perfect balance between being super sweet and supportive, yet still pushing you to work hard! This was followed by fitness challenges for prizes.
Although I surprised myself and got to the top 3 girls for the plank challenge, I had to surrender after planking for 4 minutes! This was the first thing I gained from this event, a sense of pride and belief in my fitness abilities. I think it’s easy to get into the habit of focusing on how far you still have to go towards reaching your goals, but what this event and the three inspirational women behind it taught me, is that fitness is a very personal journey and that you should be proud of yourself every step of the way.
We then got to snack on a whole range of goodness. My favourite snack had to be the Wheyhey Banoffee protein ice cream though! Not only is it protein packed, gluten free, sugar free, low in fat and only 149 calories, but it’s also incredibly delicious! I cannot even put it into words, you just need to try it for yourself! The Bounce ball selection was incredible as well, my favourite flavour is definitely the cacao mint, as it reminds me of one of my favourite naughty treats- aeros! We also got to sample various delicious items from Supernatural, Coco Pro and Emily’s Bliss Balls.
There was then time to get our hair and nails done, get #GirlGains temporary tattoos, mingle and shop. I loved getting to meet the founder of one of my favourite active wear brands Active in Style and having the chance to pick up a gorgeous new pair of leggings and tank from their stall at the event. She also gave me the nickname of ‘Dharma Girl’, as I was wearing my favourite Dharma Bums leggings. Lunch was then provided by Fresh Fitness Food, which consisted of quinoa pots, chicken and vegetable skewers, protein coconut balls and brownies.
Although, initially I was nervous about attending the event alone, I was able to arrange to meet up with @balanceandprogress and @natmuscat via instagram and all attend the event together. This is another thing that I gained from this event; new friendships with other people who are just as passionate about health and fitness as I am! It was so inspirational to be surrounded by and connect with women all with similar interests and motivations. I even made a lovely friend Cath that had been to the same university as me!
The day concluded with talks from the three founders of #GirlGains and a Q&A session led by Chessie King where we got the answers to all our questions regarding macros, how to get abs, cheat meals and so much more! We then took a few more selfies and left with goodie bags that were overflowing with more amazing treats!
It really was the most amazing, inspiring event and I’ve come away with so many personal gains, and not just those involving my glutes! I gained friendships, fitness knowledge, confidence and a larger awareness for the amazing healthy brands that are taking the industry by storm.
I’m already counting down the days to the next event and would highly recommend them to anyone interested in connecting with other like-minded health and fitness enthusiasts.
