Fun fact about walking: it burns more fat per calorie than jogging or sprinting.
This isn’t to say it burns more calories, but rather that the place that the calories are coming from is different. Walking burns more fat per calorie, since fat needs oxygen in order to be used for energy. The body is able to use more oxygen for walking, since it is a lower intensity exercise than jogging or sprinting. Therefore, for higher intensity exercises like sprinting, your body uses other sources of energy, like carbohydrate stores.
People often say that they don’t have the time to exercise, the money to join an expensive gym, or the capability to carry out strenuous physical activity. This is why I believe walking, and in particular power walking, is the most overlooked way to burn fat, as it is an easy, free and enjoyable way to exercise without even thinking about it.
Of course, although just taking the stairs, or walking that last bus stop is a great way to sneak some exercise into your day, it’s even more enjoyable if you are immersed in a beautiful setting.
Living in Switzerland I like to make the most of getting active outdoors and power walks in the countryside with my family are one of my favourite things. I have a passion for travel, so any sport that allows me to discover new places whilst exercising at the same time, is a definite winner.
One of my most loved walking routes is one up to the Château de Landskron in France, just over the Swiss border. This is a stunning trail that takes you on an adventure through vibrant green fields, the forest, a picturesque French village, and finally the castle, which boasts stunning views. I hope that I was able to capture its beauty for you all.
